Innovation is continuing at a rapid pace with more and more devices coming over the next few weeks following the launch of Windows8 on October 26. Tablets, Convertibles, Ultrabooks™ and everything in between are creating more choices than ever before.

The State of Gadgets:

The average person now owns five devices that connect to the Internet, some people have as many as 15

There are more connected gadgets in the world than people on the planet

Gadget ownership is expected to outpace population projections at an increasingly wider margin

Every minute in 2011, 710 computers were sold (555 of them with Intel Inside®), 925 iPhone 4S were sold, and 38 tons of e-waste was generated

How did we get to a world in which gadgets outnumber humans?

Streamlining the Digital World

At Intel, we are riding the wave of the massive shifting computing landscape and bringing forward innovative computing experiences. Andy Grove might call it a “strategic inflection point.” We live in a world of highly-mobile, touch-enabled, convertible devices from a variety of manufacturers. The distinctions between what a phone and a computer are has blurred, people think in terms of what experience they want in the moment and choose the device to fit that need. The next generation of devices will streamline how we use the internet, play games, and make phone calls. We are moving away from “single-use” devices like cameras or iPods.

This trend is most evident in the explosion of tablets. Take a look at Apple’s latest quarterly earnings release, the tech company reported a 10% decline in iPod sales-a single function device- but reported a 28% increase in iPhone sales, and an 84% increase in iPad sales-- multi-functional devices. The staggering increase in demand for multi-functional devices paired with the decline in single function device sales is a strong indicator of the desire for the usage flexibility.

There’s been a surge in new tablets coming into the market. Just last month a collection of new Intel-based Windows 8 tablets were announced from several different manufacturers, including Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, LG, ZTE, and Asus. What makes these tablets uniquely different is that it takes full advantage of both the new touch-friendly interface and the classic Windows desktop mode providing the user flexibility. In addition, these thin and lightweight machines are optimized with fast and responsive performance.

While tablets are an excellent device for consuming content, often times you want to do more with your tablet - whether it is publishing a blog, sending an attachment, creating a presentation, etc. For many given the desire to consume and create content, consolidating to a more converged device may be attractive.

Why own a tablet when your laptop can convert to a tablet device? This new and emerging category of computing brings the best of both worlds; a full-fledged laptop experience when you need it, or a tablet, in one device. Take, for example, the Asus Taichi. When opened, the Taichi looks like a regular laptop, but when closed, it becomes a tablet that can be controlled either with a stylus or through touch. Or the Lenovo Yoga, which similarly transforms from a lightweight laptop to a large tablet, but does so with the ability to fold the keyboard behind the screen. These convertible gadgets have redefined the device market.

Innovation with Intel Inside®

Whichever device you rely on, doesn’t it make sense to have the best?
